Dr. David Bove trained at Bastyr University in both Naturopathic Medicine and Acupuncture/East Asian Medicine with a focus in Counseling & Health Psychology. He is a member of the Psychiatric Association of Naturopathic Physicians (PsychANP). He opened Inner Gate Medicine in Eugene, Oregon, in 2023, to offer a holistic approach that addresses many of myriad factors accelerating our present mental health crisis, beginning with alienation from nature.

Since 2013, he has been the Medical Director at Chrysalis Behavioral Health, an innovative community-based drug and alcohol treatment agency; part of White Bird Clinic, the Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) providing primary care services for the underserved in Lane County Dr. Bove’s integrative approach to psychiatry examines brain energy & metabolism in reference to the health of the whole body. He combines naturopathic medicine, nutritional and herbal remedies, lifestyle modifications with conventional therapies, to restore equilibrium and promote balanced physiology.  A comprehensive medical history is gathered along with lab work and functional assessments to create a customized treatment protocol aimed at promoting optimal health and improving medical and psychiatric outcomes for each patient.

TREATMENT PROCESS & PHILOSOPHY

Inner Gate Medicine process starts with a comprehensive initial consultation to take place over 90 min. During this time a complete medical and psychiatric history will be taken with an emphasis on understanding the individual’s unique mind–body narrative. Clinical examination is coupled with lab work, genetic analysis, and a review of prior medical treatment.  An individualized treatment plan is developed to address the root causes of dis-ease. As the careful gardener gives attention to the complexity of soil & terrain, rather than a simple focus on ‘weeds’ alone, naturopathic medicine seeks to restore & enrich the entire ecology. Nutritional & energetic depletions, digestive gut integrity, hormonal & endocrine shifts, immune dysregulation, and toxic influences, all
need to be attended to. This is an exploration of the ‘upstream’ dysfunction (genetic, biochemical, psychological, lifestyle) that may ripple down, resulting in ill health. Therapies may involve nutritional supplementation with nutrients, amino acids, antioxidants, botanical medicines, hormonal support, or novel use of conventional prescriptions. Therapeutic dietary change can also be a key restorative intervention. While neurotransmitters play a role in mood disorders, depression, for example, is not a
SSRI deficiency and treatment are always geared towards correcting the underlying imbalance. When conventional pharmaceuticals are part of the treatment plan, they are prescribed in the context of addressing the whole person, Body, Mind & Sprit. This requires attending to the core foundations of health: Nutrition, Sleep, Movement, Relationships, and Stress Management.

Holistic Treatment

Holistic medicine is based on the belief that humans are a complex integration of Body-Mind-Spirit and that we express health through the balanced integration of three axes of being:

Body – Molecular and Biochemical Patterns
Mind – Thoughts, Emotions, and Beliefs
Spirit – Awareness, Self, Intuition, and Meaning

Holistic practitioners believe that our health is affected by our genetic code, our upbringing, what we eat, what we think, and what we do. Within this model, a depressed mood may again be treated with traditional medicine, but the depression can be seen as part of a larger interrelation of forces and patterns within the same individual. Rather than the cause of depression being purely chemical, a holistic practitioner will look for underlying causes in all three layers of being.
